Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas, son of late Mr. K.K. Thomas and late Mariamma, was born and brought up in Thiruvanchoor, Kottayam District, Kerala. In his early years, he showed great interest in priesthood. This culminated in his appointment as altar boy for St. Thomas Jacobite Church in Thiruvanchoor at the age of 8 by His Eminence Mor Clemis Abraham. After completing his pre-degree education, the altar boy took the first step to his priesthood when he was ordained as a sub-deacon (qoruyo) by His Grace Mor Gregorius Gheevarghese (Perumpilly Thirumeni). Meanwhile, as he began his education in the seminary, he graduated from Kerala University with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. After completing the seminary studies, His Grace Mor Gregorius Gheevarghese (Perumpilly Thirumeni) ordained him as a full deacon. Before his ordination as priest, he married Ms. Achamma Alackaparambil (Kochumol) in 1986. At the age of 22, Perumpilly Thirumeni ordained Deacon Sabu Thomas as a priest. Immediately after his entrance into priesthood, he continued with his education at the Kerala University in Trivandrum and received his Masters Degree in Malayalam Literature. Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas then served in various churches of the Kottayam Diocese including St. Mary’s Church, Pampady E., St. Mary’s Dayara Church, Trikothamangalam, St. Mary’s Church, Neelimangalam, St. Ephriam’s Church, Vadavathoor, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Kottayam and churches in the High Range Region. In the early years of priesthood, Fr. Sabu Thomas assumed important roles in numerous religious organizations such as Vice President of the Malankara Jacobite Youth Association for a period of 2 years and also as Editor of the Syrian Sandesam Church Magazine for a period of 5 years.
In 1993, H.E. Mor Athanasius Yeshu` Samuel appointed Fr. Sabu Thomas as the new vicar of our church and made necessary arrangements for his emigration to USA in the same year. His wife, son Eldho and daughter Alby arrived in 1995. He continued his involvement in religious organizations in his capacity as the Chairman of Kerala Christian Fellowship of Southern California (KCFSC) for 5 years. Fr. Sabu is also active in the Malayalee community of Southern California and North America. He also helped establish a church in Phoenix, AZ and ministered the faithful for a brief period in the absence of a full-time priest there.
